St. Catherine's parish was established in 1913 as a mission of St. Bonaventure's Church of Underwood,ND Father Bonaventure Hansen, O.S.B. was the priest responsible for forming most of the present parishes in McLean County, including St. Catherine's. A new church was built. In 1951 the Altar Society was formed. By the mid 1950’s, it was evident that a new church was needed. In 1957, with only 17 families, Fr. Frolijic lead the parish in building a new church. The frame building cost $30,000, with mostly volunteer labor. At the dedication of the church on July 6, 1958, Bishop Hacker commended this small parish for its boldness and faith in building a new church.
In 1964, new pews were installed, and in 1969 a new altar was put in place. In 2004 a new "cluster" was formed which included St. Edwin's of Washburn as well as St. Bonaventure's of Underwood. In 2009 construction began on a new addition, including a main floor bathroom, gathering space, lift, and storage room. Work was completed in 2010, with new windows, siding and metal roof. Some of the finishing touches added were a stained glass window by Iona Erickson, wooden coat racks by Mike Erdmann, and a high altar from St. Joseph's Church of Bremen, ND.
St. Catherine's has been served by many good priests over the years, and is presently served by Father Patrick Cunningham. Our church family currently consists of 47 families. We are indeed "the little church that could" and we look forward to serving the good Catholic families of our area for many years to come.
